Op-Ed for American Journal of Nursing

My Op-Ed about Utah’s H.B. 261, which bans DEI initiatives in higher education, threatening nursing education and patient care. DEI fosters culturally competent nurses, improves outcomes, and supports underrepresented students. Removing it risks worsening shortages and hindering accreditation. Click to learn why this matters and how nurses can fight back. #DEI #Nursing #HealthEquity

Letter to the editor - L.A. Times (when it was good, before Henry Rollins left)

My feelings during the height of the pandemic about the dilemma of helping those who hurt others.

Broadcasting Bad Health - a policy paper I wrote when I was a fetus and a food activist starving in London

After working for the International Obesity Task Force - doing everything from booking hotel rooms for my villain of a boss (I should write a story about that), getting coffee for everyone, or doing research (gasp!), I worked at the Food Commission with the Brilliant - no really, BRILLIANT, Tim Lobstien and Tim Lang (a man who has more good ideas than you will have in a lifetime, before you have had your morning coffee!) and wrote this report.

And truly - I worship Tim Lang - check out his books: Feeding Britain, Food Policy, The New Protectionism, and my favorite The Atlas of FOOD. No single person has been more influential on the way I see the world, the way I write and use my voice to make change, and the way I frame questions about how policy can be used to help or hurt people.

  • From Ancient Rome to Reddit: how beta males broke the world

Good times lead to weak men - weak mean lead to chaos.

This non-fiction book explores how resentment, and poor self esteem has led to a generation of insecure “beta males” cosplaying an idea of what masculinity should look like.

Blending history, psychology, and cultural critique, this book presents a provocative analysis of the role weak men have played in political upheavals, and destructive social movements in the past and present.

Dissecting concepts of power, status, and the forces driving today’s fractured world this book asks - what lessons we can learn from the past to fix our future.

  • The Tyranny of Genius

The Reformed United States is ruled by a Geniocracy, members selected through a series of tests, ensuring mistakes of the past are not repeated. The Geniuses, Knowers, and Deciders are the ruling classes and keep control through strict censorship and social credit.

The Creators, however, are a group of artists, scientists, writers, and philosophers given absolute freedom to "create" and generate ideas for the good of society. The problem is, when you give people freedom think, they start asking questions.

Faced with the possibility of becoming a selfless Genius, Hannah soon discovers the true cost of living in a society that is ‘tolerant and free’. Will she accept her place as one of the elite the Geniuses claim to have eradicated or will she find a way out?

  • Harnessing Your Hormones: The Science of GLP-1, Dopamine, and Metabolic Health

I’m going to have a crack at non-fiction, drawing upon the years I have spent working with patients in the world of obesity (and lifestyle medicine). After railing against the diet industry, I’m going to write a diet book. I know, I know… but this one will be different. Aimed at health professionals and health concerned individuals alike, this book will aim to break down the science behind obesity, weight loss, and what we can do to enhance our experience while on GLP1 Receptor Agonists as well as use food to enhance our own ability to maximize our own metabolic hormones if we are not taking medications.

I am going to rope Dr. Nicholas Paulk into being a co-author. He is the ONLY bariatric surgeon who is also a Board certified member of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (truly a triple threat). If he doesn’t agree, his amazing wife will make him, so I’m not worried.

Products I love

Novlr

I tried other programs but I fell in love with Novlr. It is subscription based but you can pay more and become an “owner” and get a lifetime membership. It has ProWritingAid built in. I like the stats that keep you feeling motivated and the tutorials and articles about writing.

ProWritingAid

This is a really helpful tool (tool, it isn’t a substitute for human judgment) that I use for academic and creative writing. It is built into Novlr, so I am considering letting my stand alone subscription lapse but I might end up regretting that. I will let you know!

Manuscript Academy Podcast

This group has classes and are the ones who came up with #MSWL. Their podcast is enjoyable and useful. I can’t wait to take a class - they are online - I am expecting their offerings to be excellent based on the podcast. You can also pay a nominal fee to have an editor look over your query letter.
